One unique visualization that might be interesting to implement is to plot a trace of a highlighted lineage. Essentially, instead of totally removing points from old time points, we connect the locations with lines so that one can see the history of that lineage. It's possible that this will just produce a hairball, but it might be informative in some way.
I think that's definitely an idea worth pursuing; if it's clean enough you could get an idea of how much cells within a lineage migrate during development.
