Add _extension() helper #55

There are few things I left shared. That's aliases and join criteria. Haven't figured out how to separate them cleanly yet.

See npm test definition in package.json. It uses these lines to test that empty extension isn't broken by running same tests for it.

@Suor: Sorry for the silence, I had a few days in a row of meetings & have been really busy. Should be able to look at it again today & hopefully merge it...
