Suggesting https://plugins.craftcms.com/express-forms as 3rd party plugin to fill in this role. The free tier offers plenty, and has the possibility to pay for the Pro version with extra bells and whistles.

I did some research this summer and I implemented, not completed, free form with WET. I could create a new branch to show how this plugin work. You thought? https://plugins.craftcms.com/freeform
