Why is US Recovered Cases so Different from WorldoMeters? #2195

Hi guys, I have been really confused about the US Recovered data since yesterday.

The WorldoMeters had 36,948 recovered cases yesterday and 38,820 for today, yet JHU suggested 43,482 (with a 32% growth rate from the day before) yesterday and 47,763 cases today.

Does anyone know why the numbers are so different and which one is probably more reliable? None of both sites really credited a data source of recovered cases so I am pretty lost to find clues.

Because world of meters is a scripted timer counter, not actual data. Covid could disappear world wide tomorrow all at once and the meters would still increase until a human on the back end stops them.

WoM uses data to create estimated projections of where the actual numbers should be based on a model from the data, not realtime updates based on data uploads

From the description here, I think the situation you described only applies to the WoM live counters rather than its COVID-19 data? Copying the "How it works" paragraph here:

For the COVID-19 data, we collect data from official reports, directly from Government's communication channels or indirectly, through local media sources when deemed reliable. We provide the source of each data update in the "Latest Updates" (News) section. Timely updates are made possible thanks to the participation of users around the world and to the dedication of a team of analysts and researchers who validate data from an ever-growing list of over 5,000 sources. For the live counters on the home page, we elaborate instead a real-time estimate through our proprietary algorithm which processes the latest data and projections provided by the most reputable organizations and statistical offices in the world.
