Hi Mike,
We've confirmed we are pulling the data from NV accurately and that this spike in data is genuine (although likely an artifact of some reporting delay). NYT is publishing the same spike, for reference. We've reached out to the state for comment.
Hi Mike,
We received the following message from the Nevada Department of Health and have been given permission to share publicly:
"In a recent review of Nevada’s COVID-19 data, it was found that some laboratory case reporting was being counted by Southern Nevada Health District, but the lab results were not being received by the State. That issue has been resolved and information is now being received by both entities. The cases that were identified in this review occurred between November 2021 and May and were added to the cumulative confirmed case count on Nevada’s COVID-19 Dashboard on July 27th, increasing the State’s total cases by about 25,000. This historical lab data has increased the cumulative cases but did not affect recent metrics related to current trends. I hope this helps."
Thank you, @CSSEGISandData ! I appreciate all you do.
The entire state of Nevada had been reporting about 8,000 cases per week. Clark County, home to Las Vegas, reported about 5,000 cases on July 20 and about 28,000 cases on July 27. I'm not finding press releases or news stories describing such a spike. I am seeing local reporting describing declines in case counts, e.g. https://www.8newsnow.com/news/health/coronavirus-health/new-omicron-ba-5-causing-most-covid-19-cases-in-clark-county/
