"The disc could not be read" PS2 Slim #306

Hey there. I've tried for some time now to use FreeDVDBoot ever since my PS2 stopped reading games. You might be asking why I'm even trying this if my PS2 can't read DVDs: the problem is that it can, just not games. Every time I try to put a game in the drive starts clicking while it fumbles to read the disc, failing in the process. I've tried to clean it and adjust the potentiometer already, to no avail. But the laser isn't totally dead, or so it seems.

If the disc is a DVD Video it seems to be able to read that, but not any games that I've tried. CDs work perfectly fine, of course.

I've tried burning with ImgBurner at 16x and 6x speed, and also with CDBurnerXP at 1x speed with Finalize and Compatibility checks enabled, I've tried using one of the DVD Videos it CAN read beforehand to "calibrate" the laser. Nothing worked.

I really have no clue what else I can try, I seem to be SO CLOSE and yet can't do it.

My console is a PS2 Slim with a 3.11E DVD Player and an SCPH-77004 laser.

Put a DVD-R blank in your writer and open up Imgburn . Select Write Image file to disc . On the right there will be information about your blank . What burning speed is shown there ? If it's 8x and 16x maybe you need to try on an older writer which supports 4x .

oathbound01 commented 2 years ago

The slowest speed supported looks like it's 6x and, as I said, I've already tried using that. I don't know what happened when I tried burning at 1x speed using CDBurnerXP, since it seems to have gone on pretty smoothly, but to be honest I doubt it would have changed much, had I used an older writer.

I might be wrong, but it just seems like it won't matter that much, considering my situation.

Try to find this external drive, Verbatim DPAA ( QQ3N in Imgburn ), it can write as low as 3x . Or any SATA drive made before....let's say 2014 . Or maybe buy another laser lens.

oathbound01 commented 2 years ago

I've tried pursuing the latter to little avail, but I might try again. Regarding the second one... I do have a SATA Drive that was made no later than 2015, so I might try that one, thanks for the tip. Reconnecting it would be cumbersome but I can definitely manage it.

Although I still find really odd that my PS2 refuses to read any DVDs that aren't The Aristocats or Troy.

Okay, I've managed to get the old SATA Drive to work and it gets to 4x speed. As I've guessed, it changed absolutely nothing.

I'm not sure what to do next.

You could get a FMCB install on your memory card and use OPL . If you use USB some games will have laggy FMVs , if you use SMB ( network ) they will work better . Or you could buy a new lens and test your discs again or just burn games .

oathbound01 commented 2 years ago

Okay so I've managed to get a FMCB install by piggybacking off another PS2 that has a working DVD drive, and yes, I am planning on using SMB once I get another storage MC so that I can avoid using the one with FMCB to fiddle with the .elfs and such.

Should I mark this thread as solved? While I did find a way to get FMCB on my card, the issue I presented in the beginning is TECHNICALLY not solved, and to be honest I'd really like to have a backup FreeDVDBoot Disc if things go south with FMCB.

I hope someone has any clue as to why my PS2 lens is fine enough to read some DVDs, but too damaged to NOT read FDVDB and games.

Hello, I had purchased a PS2 Slim recently and it had a problem reading discs. The problem was that the oil had dried up on the laser rails. The laser lens was also dirty. I used isopropyl alcohol with a qtip and cleaned the lens in a circular motion. Let it dry for a few minutes. After turning off and unplugging the system, of course. Then I opened the console and put clear mineral oil on the left and right laser rails. A few drops on each rail is fine. This oil protects it from wear and corrosion. It is rated for the heat too. Look up mineral oil properties and how it is used in lubricant of gears. If this doesn’t work, it is out of alignment and you need special tools to calibrate the height of the laser assembly. In addition, turn on the console without a disc and press the green triangle. Find diagnosis mode and enable it. While in that menu, put in a disc and diagnosis mode will function. If required, go back and enter disc. You’re welcome.
