This adds:

a scansion protocol buffer specification (scansion.proto) and a Makefile to compile it into a Python module (scansion_pb2.py). By running make in src you will obtain this Python module.
a scansion.py module that can scan lines or documents of lines, placing its results into the appropriate protobuf message
an executable scan.py script that scans documents and writes the resulting protobuf message in human-readable ("textproto") format.
a draft unit test scansion_test.py

TODO for this PR:

add a basic unit test using scansion.scan_line as its base.

TODO for subsequent PRs:

Move the full set of variable rule tests into these unit tests.
Use scan.py to debug the variable rules grammars and minimize defective lines; some of these ought to be added as unit tests, too.
Extract syllables and feet, enriching the protobuf messages to accomodate.

As a side-effect:

it renames some grammar rules etc. for consistency
it moves the (increasingly obsolete) rewriter library into src

Sample usage of scan.py:

Create environment as per README.
Compile as per README.
Execute src/./scan.py --far grammars/all.far --name "Aeneid, book 1" data/Aeneid/Aeneid01.txt data/Aeneid/Aeneid01.textproto

This will log any composition and scanning errors, and then write the resulting protobuf message as a human-readable text file data/Aeneid/Aeneid01.textproto. To iteratively improve, simply modify and recompile the grammars as per step 2, then repeat step 3.

Sample usage of scansion_test.py:

Follow steps 1-2 above.
Execute src/scansion_test.py and follow along with output.

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'google', even though I have the google module installed I think

Confusingly the thing you need to install is not itself called google, that's just a namespace for third-party Python code from Google.

Can you follow the instructions on the README and repeat the process? I just tested it out on a second computer and it worked great.

That conda step should have installed protoc. Could you paste the output of conda list here?

It looks to me you haven't executed the steps here yet: https://github.com/CUNY-CL/LatinScansion#installation. I say that because if you had, you wouldn't have all these other things installed, since we install only what we need.

That'll create a new environment...then do the instructions here: https://github.com/CUNY-CL/LatinScansion#compilation

Also make sure to git pull origin master (or in your fork, git pull remote master) to grab any missing changes.

That's weird, I know I executed the installation steps. If I try to run conda env create -f environment.yml, it says CondaValueError: prefix already exists: /Users/jillianchang/opt/anaconda3/envs/LatinScansion

Try deleting that directory and repeating the steps. When you run conda list, it should say something like:

packages in environment at /home/kbg/.anaconda/envs/scansion:

if you're properly in the environment. the list of packages should also be a lot shorter than the one you posted, which makes me think one or the other step failed.

Glad to hear. Sorry we have to move to the Conda environments thing---it's a pain---but it does work well for reproducibility once you get the hang of it.

You only need to ever use that tool when you add a new grammar file, and I we may not need any more grammar files. If we do we can just edit the Makefile ourselves. Perhaps you can see the basics of its syntax?
