As noted in #76 and #77, the python scripts running behind the scenes are not python3 compatible. This PR adds automated testing in both python 2 and python 3, and also fixes the issues preventing python 3 scripts from running.

This PR is not ready yet, I just wanted to ensure the initial TravisCI setup is correct. There are several commits coming and I'll comment again when this work is complete.
