We have a generic error message which could be improved.
One reason (which may not be immediately clear) as to why an email doesn't send is because the gmail account which NodeMailer uses is down/deactivated/suspended.
This just happened to us as someone tried to hack the account. We had to reset the password and change all of the config files (local and on Heroku)
