Valence is officially defined as:
A measure from 0.0 to 1.0 describing the musical positiveness conveyed by a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive (e.g. happy, cheerful, euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (e.g. sad, depressed, angry).
So it looks like we're listening to less cheerful music now than in the past (on average). An interesting follow-up analysis would be whether it goes hand in hand with lyrics mood...
With loudness I'm curious, as the trend starting in 80s looks like a reflection of (in)famous loudness wars started by going digital (CDs mass production).
Nice plots 👍 Over the decades: louder songs with more energy and danceability. Any thoughts on what valence might mean... decreasing over the decades... See you tomorrow.
