Create a project creation worksheet #1072

Based on conversation with @MappingKat (and I'm sure @dpalomino and @fhpichel have lots of ideas too), the idea is to have a "get your thoughts together" kind of worksheet for users to be able to access through the platform and/or cadasta website. This will serve to consolidate ideas about the project before starting the project creation wizard. It would also serve a bit as a marketing piece since it could present platform options in a friendly informative way to new users.

This could take on many forms but I would think the data wouldn't be stored in the platform db but something simpler like google forms. Or even a simple printable pdf? Not sure...

I think some of the questions would parallel the wizard. The only part the development team would be involved in is adding a link to the worksheet once it is created.

@dpalomino suggested some of @fhpichel's FAQ document he is working on might be good to incorporate here too

wonderchook commented 7 years ago

can you explain further who is going to use this data that is collected? Is this so the programs team can help people get set-up or is this supposed to help the person setting up their project?

What about this form at the bottom here? http://cadasta.org/platform/ Would we expand it further to include specific project needs?

This reads as something @bethschechter should be involved in since she is responsible for curriculum and information for users. At least it reads to me like a learning tool.

clash99 commented 7 years ago

@wonderchook - I've renamed it to project creation worksheet since that probably fits better. Agree @bethschechter should be involved. I'm assuming she will be writing documentation on creating the questionnaire gui so we can leverage that. This is more of an exercise for the user creating the project rather than anyone at Cadasta so I don't even think we need to collect the data. Its more of a task to ensure we are providing a help link to documentation or creating a pdf-type of printable worksheet before we overwhelm a user with the questionnaire creation in the project wizard.

nastynoel commented 7 years ago

@MappingKat and @clash99 - are we confident that users will get immediate value from this versus some materials that would essentially be a pre-cursor to something like this? By that mean, more fundamental training/knowledge materials on the basics of a mapping and documentation project.

I'm in no way advocating for a 98 page document, but would something similar to this http://documents.worldbank.org/curated/en/318621468333002773/Open-data-for-resilience-initiative-Planning-an-open-cities-mapping-project, but perhaps less wordy and more visual, be more valuable than a worksheet? I would definitely see this as more of a natural extension of some of the stuff @bethschechter is doing. Elements of the WB/HOT guide could probably even be re-packaged.

wonderchook commented 7 years ago

@nastynoel in my experience the WB guide is only useful to a certain kind of person. What about trying to figure out how our users learn best and go from there?

I like the questions Ushahidi has, simple and not too overwhelming: https://www.ushahidi.com/support/questions-to-ask-before-you-deploy

I was envisioning an online form where partners focus on their specific requirements (through open ended questions) and the tools that they can use (what cadasta offers). There could be some advice but the ultimate idea of the page is to make sure that Cadasta and the partners are prepared and on the same page (understand their end goals, red flags/road blocks, prep steps, etc clearly).

pre-survey

wonderchook commented 7 years ago

Ah so this is very similar to the eventual "wizard" I was suggesting. I don't think we'll do anything about it until we have a few things in place.

Most of our partners won't necessarily know the answers to this. The idea was to have a multiple step process to walk them through it.

dpalomino commented 7 years ago

Maybe we can integrate some of this in the Project Creation Wizard with:

dpalomino commented 7 years ago

Hi @bethschechter. I think this is also relevant to you, something to keep in mind...

bethschechter commented 7 years ago

@dpalomino thank you! definitely keeping in mind. LMK when it's time to create the wizard :)
