it seems you're using the default Ubuntu desktop session. Unfortunately, it does not support running Cairo-Dock anymore (due to the move to the Wayland backend of GNOME Shell by default).
What could work as an alternative is to stick with a desktop session that uses X11:
- try selecting the "Ubuntu on Xorg" session at login -- this should be able to run CD as normal, but might have other issues with desktop components
- use the desktop session provided by CD -- this should show up in the login menu as "GNOME/Cairo-Dock (Compiz)", however, I'm unsure if it is included in the official packages in Ubuntu, if not then you could try using the updated packages from the Dev PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~cairo-dock-team/+archive/ubuntu/weekly (let us know if you have issues installing / setting up)
Or, use the dev version of Cairo-Dock (version 3.5.99 from the PPA) that works under some Wayland sessions, but unfortunately not ones that are GNOME-based:
- use the KDE Plasma desktop environment (
kde-plasma-desktop) package (you can add CD to autostart in some of the settings, and also remove the default panels) - I can also recommend Wayfire: https://github.com/WayfireWM/wayfire/ although you likely need to compile it from source for the best experience on Ubuntu (the official packages are outdated)
With either only one dock or more, and the Bottom Dock set to 'Bottom' the dock remains just a bit below the top of the screen as you can see here: Default theme

I'm running Ubuntu 24.04
I used CD several years ago and don't recall ever having this issue. Did I miss something in the setup ?
