Where is Our Name module supposed to go? @aleggett23

sydrosa commented 3 years ago

Hi, there are some problems with the copy, most of which will not be included on the page for styling purposes.

  1. We should try our best to keep the amount of wording to a minimum. This is because all of our containers that hold text have set heights and we want them to maintain the same across the pages. We will have to cut out some of these longer paragraphs.
  2. I'm not sure where our-name module is supposed to go, since there was no space for it in our design. Did you want a new module to be made for this to go in (this is rhetorical... at this point we just don't have the time)? Please use the designer's prototype and Sketch files to see where there is copy/what we have space to include, and let's trim a lot of the fat.
  3. There are spelling errors, and wording in here that I do not think that IBM will approve of. Things like "God-given" won't fly. Did we have a content writer look over this? @yrabun can you please look over this?

We will not push our pull request into master until we have confirmation that we can move forward.

@devineam good job on your first pull request - super duper proud of you đź‘Ť

CC @drealuc for vis.

Wording mistake on the WhyVote page. The last paragraph says "For my information on Black people’s journey to vote check out". It should say "For more information on Black people’s journey to vote check out".

Finalized Revisions For Website Copy~

  1. Change five fifths voter at the top of Landing Page to Five Fifths (no voter)
  2. Erase sentence that starts “we will educate”
  3. Move the John Lewis Quote to the top of the page and increase font 1 size. Remove "2012" after Lewis.
  4. Directly beneath John Lewis quote insert this:

5/5 equals a whole. A whole person, a whole community, a whole nation.

With Five Fifths Voter, we put the power back in your hands. Our platform not only informs voters of the various steps on how to vote and how to make it count but also supplies the tools to overcome the roadblocks in the process whether you are a first-time or veteran voter, legally disabled, an elderly citizen, have a criminal history, etc. we have made the voting process equal and seamless for all people and provide you with a personalized experience and community to build and grow with on your journey.

  1. Scroll down and change "five fifths voter." to Five/Fifths Voter. on black, horizontal menu bar

  2. Capitalize the E’s on Educate Empower-Enable under Our Mission. Make sure the periods are consistent.

  3. Under Our Mission REPLACE the Latin words with this:

The name Five-Fifths was inspired to combat the ideology promoted in the Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787 where the United States Constitutional Convention made the ruling to strategically count only three out of every five slaves as people. This decision was made to influence and increase a state's number of seats in the House of Representatives and determine how much it would pay in taxes. As leaders in the slave trade, this favored Southern states by giving them a third more seats in Congress and a third more electoral votes than if slaves had been ignored, but fewer than if slaves and free people had been counted equally. As a result, this manipulation of the voting system not only provided motivation to extend slavery, it additionally perpetuated this notion that People of color were only a fraction of a human being. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed racist voting practices, however voter inequality is still a problem today. Our Mission is to change that. We strive to mitigate voter suppression by leveling the playing field for all voters. Through our three pillars: EDUCATE-EMPOWER-ENABLE, Five/Fifths will help you take the pen back in your hand to write your story.

**_Together, we will change the narrative._**
  1. Under “ Educate”, Keep the Knowledge is Power quote and REPLACE Thomas Jefferson’s name with Francis Bacon
  2. Go to Why Vote Page. Erase the current content and replace with this:

Your vote = Your voice

Particularly in disparate communities that are predominantly populated by African Americans, the number of disenfranchised voters have been at an all-time high. Voting rights have not been fully exercised and suppressive measures have stripped voter rights that are largely due to lack of access, knowledge, and prejudice. This has left many discouraged and wondering if there is a purpose to voting at all. Five-Fifths was created as a reminder that if our votes didn’t matter, voter suppression wouldn’t exist. In fact, voting is a key component in reclaiming power by determining your future reality as well as that of future generations.

Don’t like certain laws in your community? Voting can change that.

Your vote will influence decisions made in areas such as : Taxation- how much you will pay and where your money will go, Employment (i.e. raising minimum wage), Public Transportation, Housing, Education, and Healthcare. Voting gives you an option to decide who is elected in office that makes these decisions. It is our “civic duty”, yes, but most importantly, it is your soul opportunity to stand up for the issues YOU care about. By choosing not to vote, you place that decision in the hands of someone else.

YAASSS! @supriya-bharadwaj Can you please help edit the copy just posted by Alexandria above.

supriya-bharadwaj commented 3 years ago

Also, I reviewed the README.md file for five/fifth voter and submitted a PR at https://github.com/embrace-call-for-code/embrace-the-vote/pull/82, unfortunately without the DCO check :(. I am assuming that I reviewed the incorrect file, right?

So, should I be closing that PR?

Thanks,

Hi @supriya-bharadwaj, there was just a small issue with the ReadMe, where all names should be on their own line (in two lines of code, there are two names per line). I will take care of the DCO check so long as you update/re-commit and fix the other small issues. Thanks for everything!!!

NAME CHANGE ACCORDING TO STEVE K. OUR NAME HAS TO BE: FIVE-FIFTHS VOTER. You can remove the the dash or use slant but the word "voter" is needed.

@yrabun I went ahead and updated all instances of "five/fifth" to Five/Fifths Voter. These changes will take effect along with other copy changes when my latest PR is approved.
