There is a message that basemap tiles will be outdated by the end of the month. See:

Can they be renewed?

Thanks Geoffrey

I have followed the Stamen project's advice and moved to a commercial map tile host Stadia Maps. We're on the free tier which is good for some 200k tiles per month which I think we'll struggle to hit. The tiles themselves should be like-for-like replacements (Stamen ran out of funding to host their open-source image tiles; Stadia have hosted them but charge for commercial/high usage)

A couple of new tickets were raised for this issue, which I believe has already been resolved (#128, #129)

If you're still seeing old tiles you may need to encourage your browser to reload its cache (ctrl+refresh) and separately hitting f5 a few times might encourage any local map tile cache to pull in new tiles. New visitors to the site won't have these old tilesets cached so should not see anything confusing.

Reopening this as I have managed to replicate this recurrent map tileset brownout. I have written to the new map host for clarification of why they're serving brownout tiles and will update here.

With a little help from Stadia maps support this now should be properly fixed. Let me know if symptoms persist.
