(This is the template to report a data issue for Vascan. If you want to report another issue, please change the template above.)

What is the URL of the page where the problem occurs? http://data.canadensys.net/vascan/taxon/4367

What data are incorrect or missing? a) Silene acaulis var. subacaulescens (F.N. Williams) Fernald & St.John b) Silene acaulis subsp. exscapa (Allioni) de Candolle c) Silene acaulis var. exscapa (Allioni) de Candolle & Lamarck

What data are you expecting instead? a) Silene acaulis var. subacaulescens (F.N.Williams) Fernald & H. St.John b) Silene acaulis subsp. exscapa (Allioni) de Candolle c) Silene acaulis var. exscapa (Allioni) de Candolle

If applicable, please provide an authoritative source. a) Tropicos & IPNI b) for subsp. exscapa, FNA lists (All.) DC.; Tropicos does not include subsp. exscapa, and IPNI lists (All.) Braun-Blanquet (1913). However, European sources* list (All.) Killias (1888) *Index Synonymique, TelaBotanica, and Flore Alpes If there is no (All.) DC. combination at the subsp. level, the Killias name would be the next earliest, unless it is illeg. for some reason. c) for var. exscapa, Tropios lists DC. & Lam., but since no other online or text references I've checked list DC. and Lam., I have to wonder if this is a mistake in Tropicos. GRIN, ITIS, FNA, USDA, Scoggan, Gray's Manual, and Hulten just have (All.)DC. (1805). The Index Synonymique lists Cariot & St.-Lag. (1889) but no any combinations of de Candolle. And IPNI lists only (All.) F.N.Williams (1896).

a) corrected b) and c) require consultation - such inconsistencies among databases is troubling - I suspect that there is no subsp. with DC., only the var.

From PAF: "Notes: The name Silene exscapa has sometimes been applied to the arctic plant. However, S. exscapa All., Fl. Pedem. 2: 83 (1785), is a local plant in the western Alps." http://nhm2.uio.no/paf/results?biogeographic=&bioclimatic=&region=&name=silene+acaulis#paf-421219a

Thus it appears that the name is misapplied as a synonym of S. acaulis - in INPN (& TelaBotanica) subsp. exscapa (All.) Killias is endemic to w Alps too

It may be necessary to reconsider the segregation of subsp. subacaulescens in NA, recognized in PAF vs subsp. acaulis Arctic

I looked at this again and found the Flore France, 1805 3rd. ed., tome 4, part 2, pp. 749-750 online: http://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/ing/Libro.php?Libro=444 or http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/71271#/summary

It looks like DC. & Lam. describes a var. β which probably equates to var. exscapa, but he provides no names for his varieties. He does state that the rank is var. So, unless the variety names are provided elsewhere, it doesn't look like DC. & Lam. made the combination var. exscapa (or subsp. exscapa). The earliest combination I see now is var. exscapa (All.) Cariot & St.-Lager 1889 in Index synonymique http://www2.dijon.inra.fr/flore-france/sf-sn.htm

I corrected the subsp. The var. is OK with DC as in VASCAN now
