@DaveHolt will be interested in the service timing advised by Shane.
Hi Steve, Was 200 hours because the motor is still new? On the D2-55 we serviced every 500 hours. 200 hours is not very practical for the winter cruise.
Agreed. Suggest you discuss with Shane. I didn't quiz him.
Shane Douglas suggests 250 hours +/- 25hours or every 12 months. So the next Volvo service would be at 300 hours. As at 19/11/17 at 199hours. That might be Feb/March which could fit nicely with preparations for the 2018 winter cruise.
Last service reported by Pittwater Marine: 4 Aug 2020, at 1183.5 hrs. It says "Next service due in 100 hours or July 2021" After return from Port Stephens race week today: hours = 1653 So we are overdue for a service The service items are detailed in the Service Manual I'll book a service with Pittwater Marine at next business day. Hi Peter and Steve,
Could you please schedule a full service of Namadgi's Volvo engine and sail drive ASAP. She is in port for two weeks commencing Monday 26/4. She will be leaving for Queensland during the second week of May.
You last performed the Volvo service in Aug 2020 with engine hours at 1183.5 hrs and commented "Next service due in 100 hours or July 2021". Engine hours are now 1653 -- so we are overdue for the service.
Work schedule
Could you please :
Please contact me with any questions and let me know when you can schedule the work. We have club members joining the boat for various maintenance task which I will schedule around you.
kind regards Steven

Hi Peter That's perfect Thank you Steven
Full service completed yesterday by Pittwater Marine -- at 1653 hours. Closing this issue until next service due.
@PSARN -- please review the first comment in this issue. How frequently should CORC be servicing its Volvo diesel? Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Steven, Its one of those questions “it depends” particularly on the usage and rigor in which general inspections are undertaken. In the course of events the engine should be “maintained” as outlined in the manuals. It should be similar for Volvo as it is for the YANMAR and ONAN manuals (which I am more familiar) along the following schedule: Daily Weekly Monthly 3 monthly Seasonal 6 monthly Yearly 2 yearly
I hope this helps. Peter
The last skippers report (from my cruise) shows engine hours at 1875 -- so the Volvo is due for a 200 hour service. I will discuss with All Marine Services and the current skippers to schedule the service.

Bill thought that a Marine Diesel in regular use could go more than 200 hours between services. His advice was to service the engine between 250 and 500 hour intervals.
Steven I thought the Onan was on a 100hr schedule and the engine 200hrs but will check. Peter

The Yanmar agent in Opua is JB Marine https://jbmarine.co.nz/yanmar/ but Seapower also service all makes of diesels. Where are the service records for the engine. I can't/shouldn't all be kept in issue # 214.
Hi. Have we booked the boat in for this service in opua? They get very busy at that time of the year. I think Seapower is the one to use and they checked our water maker recently at no cost.

Steve,
Why are you reopening an issue? If the engine is due a service, then is that an issue - I think its just routine maintenance. The Yanmar agent in Opua is JB Marine https://jbmarine.co.nz/yanmar/ but Seapower also service all diesels. Where are the service records for the engine. I can't/shouldn't all be kept in issue # 214.
On that point, is there a list of all routine serviceable items (annual radio checks, annual? greywater pump cleans/inspect, annual fire extinguisher check, etc)?

I have engaged SeaPower in Opua to conduct the engine and sail drive service. The boat key was given to Mike at Seapower 4Apr23 to conduct the service during NZ8 (which is empty) prior to the maintenance period. Allister reported current engine hours as 3276.7, which is 50% over the number of hours for a 'minor' 250 hour service, so a 'major' 500 hour service has been requested to be conducted. @smr547 @peterottesen @GarthBrice @peterwain may be interested
Paul Have you arranged for the water maker to be fixed whilst she is alongside during NZ8? Kind Regards Garth

Garth, Yes. I am hoping he will have time and parts to do both jobs. He has the key to N3.
When you arrive, I will ask home to leave the key at the marina office. Can you also check for the AustPost delivery (BBQ tray). Allister did not find it in the office. Failing that, I'll have to contact the supplier to do a search for it.
Paul We will be arriving at the marina at 2100 on 14 April. I have spoken with Michael from Seapower and asked him to leave the key onboard Namadgi so I can get into the boat when we arrive. Engine Service now CLOSED. New Issue for next service at 3525 engine hours - Issue #696
Reopening this issue -- Due to be done in Boatworks
Service Was done in New Caledonia at 3560 hours in August. I have sought a report. I think the 3900hrs service is OK so this one an be closed.
Note that we had a duplicate entry for the Volvo/Saildrive service -- I've closed issue #696 noting that it has relevant history.
Sam, The engine is approaching 3800 hours and by the time it gets to The Boatworks I suspect it will be around 3900 -- so lets these this issue open and have a full service done at Boatworks.

@mgrybaitis has just reported that engine hours are at 4223 -- it's time for a service so I'll re-open this issue and talk to Mick King shipyard.
Engine hours 4294.2 as of 16Apr24. Steve Ring advises next service to be undertaken at BoatWorks in Qld in May. In addition, source of water leak in engine bilge suspected to be anti-syphon valve/pipe seal as per photo. Water can be seen leaking when engine is running. (Yes, we checked the clamp is tight!)
There is also some oil, possibly from sail drive? Sail drive appears to be loosing oil slowly (est <50ml in 10 engine hours). No evidence of leakage into seawater when up on the slip for a hull scrape 11 Apr 24. Oil in sail drive remains clear - no indication of seawater contamination.
Whilst draining the engine bilge of oily water, we noticed the cap on top of the engine looks to be 'skewed'. Appears to be sealed as Chris added only a cup of water to the coolant overflow tank attached.
We don't want to disturb in case we break a seal, etc.
May need to added to Boat works list of jobs.
Also, there is a little debris in the sea water strainer but we can't get the lid off to clean. Is there a tool somewhere special? Again, can't risk breaking it!
I spoke with Flynn from Thwaites Marine in Coffs Harbour after he had seen the photos of the heat exchanger cap. Flynn thought the underlying problem might be salt water in the fresh water side of the cooling system. This salt water has caused the thermostat components to corrode placing mechanical pressure on the cap.
He advised that we could continue running the motor even if the cap fails and detaches from the heat exchanger. He said just keep topping the head exchanger up with fresh water a couple of time and hour.
We have a tentative booking with Flynn to look at the problem in Coffs tomorrow but we are thinking that this might not be the best location to start tinkering with the cap. The more attractive proposition is to sail onto Boatworks and have the problem addressed there.
I'd be interested in @pcbaston view

Hi Jonno,
Just a brief reminder that Namadgi 3 will arrive at the Boatworks on 6 May and will be hauled out on May 9 for antifoul work.
I've booked a berth in the Marina so you will be able to start work on the diesel service at that time. In addition to the service we have a few other issues for you to look at
The heat exchanger cap looks in danger of failing and we have been scared to touch it lest it breaks. See attached photo. It has been suggested that the corrosion might be caused by salt water in the fresh water side of the cooling system. What do you think?
In any case it is clear that we will need a new cap and associated assembly. Would it be possible for you to order the parts in advance to minimise any delays?
Looking forward to catching up on May 6
kind regards Steven

The service schedule for the Volvo Engine and saildrive is explained here
Due next at 21/7/2022 or in 200 hrs (2111 total hrs) whichever comes first
A comment from Dave Holt:
Volvo service interval. Bill & I used to plan (aspirational) interval of 250 hours but accepted that during the winter cruise it would be more like 500 hours. It’s easy to clock 50+ hours in a single booking. The service guy in Airlie is much cheaper than Pittwater!
A comment from Peter Finch at Pittwater Marine Service:
Marine diesels should be serviced every 100 hours or at 12 months. Letting it go 250 is not recommended. 500 hours is asking for major trouble.
Some discussion on this issue required.
