Heads inoperative in aft port cabin -- DO NOT USE #292

Closed smr547 closed 3 years ago

smr547 commented 3 years ago

There is a crack in the holding tank and it leaks raw sewage to the bilge. Pittwater Marine are investigating a repair. Do not use the aft port cabin heads until further notice.

smr547 commented 3 years ago

Just spoke to Steve Vicini. He has been on the boat and inspected the problem (he also talked to Peter Wain while on board). His preferred approach is to contact Bavaria in Brisbane to try to source a replacement tank. He will get back to us soon

We discussed the possibility of removing the tank and fitting a "flanged skin fitting" (bronze) to the tank. He said this kind of repair was possible but he could not guarantee its longevity as the skin fittings are not designed to work with plastic.

We await his advice.

@delcosta, @peterottesen and Peter Wain will be interested.

Hi Steve,

Just a further update. Peter Wain will be on the boat today and possibly be around for the next two days. He will have a chat to you about the holding tank and give you access. Please call me if you need access in the meantime, I can give you the code for the lock.

kind regards Steven

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the update. The boat should be returning to C18 today and is available for work until Friday evening.

It would be great if you could remove the tank so it can be repaired or we await a replacement. Will take your advice on that.

Please let me know if there is a problem with this timing.

Hi Steve,

Just wondering if you had a chance to look at Namadgi 3's holding tank? We are keen to finalise our plan of attack.

Namadgi will be out of the Marina from this evening and not back until next Tuesday. Then she is off to Queensland starting 17 April. It seems that we only have a narrow window to get this work done -- basically Wed thru Friday of next week.

Please advise what's possible.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for seeing me this morning concerning our leaking tank.

  • Namadgi 3
  • Bavaria Cruiser 46
  • Manufactured 2017
  • HIN: DEBAVL46N1B717

The sewage holding tank in the aft port heads is leaking from the join between the pump out hose and the tank itself. It looks like the tank has split at the joint -- probably due to the stress from the pump out hose.

Tank part number: 439453 (70L tank)

Current replacement part we believe is 453009 (this should be confirmed)

Could you please take a look and assess the job. Potentially, the tank could be removed and the polyethylene fitting cut away and a new brass flitting (with flange) installed. Failing that, maybe a new tank?

Photos and drawings attached.

Please contact Sam DeLorenzo (m: 0411 165 835), our club's maintenance manager, for approvals and directions.

Hi Garth,

Thank you.

I've included an image of the leaking tank and the puddle of poo in the bilge. The fracture is at the base of the tank just above the clamp on the hose on the left.

The left hose attaches to the deck fitting for pump out. The right hand hose goes directly to the sea cock. The hoses are of a high quality as are the stainless steel clamps

Unfortunately, the pump-out hose has been installed with a very tight bend which obviously puts a strong anti-clockwise turning moment on the tank protrusion where the hose is fitted. Once filled with fluid the tank has a mass of about 60kg so it is pretty immovable. Any vibration in the hose is going to put strong shearing forces on the aft side of the plastic tank connection.

Thus we have a tear that will be difficult to repair. I suspect it will require a new tank.

Your suggestion of a pair of right angle fittings is a good one. Although it means more connections (and more potential for leaks) it would avoid the problem of another tear -- something which is certain to happen again. As for the other thanks, the forward tank has a very generous loop in the pump out hose and appears to be placing only light pressure on the fitting. The starboard tank is similar to the port tank and may fail in the future if nothing is done. Perhaps replacing the hose with a longer hose (with a more generous bend) would be effective -- but space may be an issue.

It's interesting to note that the loop in the pump out hose produces a "s-bend-style" trap for effluent under the tank which will NOT discharge to sea. Based on this observation, I've decided to always flush a bucket or two of seawater down the pump-out deck fitting every time after I've discharged to sea. This ensures a relatively clean tank between skippers (really good if the tank needs to be worked on). It's something I'd recommend to other skippers.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

kind regards

Steven

Great work in finding the problem and working out what may have caused it

Would a right angle joint at the bottom of the tank take the pressure off the tank fitting?

If so do we need to do the same on the other two tanks before they fracture?

Hi Sam,

We flushed all tanks today outside the Barrenjoey light.

First the good news. The forward heads flushed to sea without any hesitation or problem.

Now the bad news regarding the port aft cabin heads. There is a crack in the base of the plastic holding tank where the pump-out pipe that joins the body of the tank. It seems the tigh bend in the pump out pipe has place substantial sideways force on the fitting and, with motion of the boat over time, the plastic has parted. The leak is slow but steady. Sending about 1 lt of waste into the bilge per hour. The smell is aweful and hazardous.

We will label the toilet as "Do not use" until a repair is done. I think it is a specialist job and would not be surprised if a new tank is required -- we will talk with Peter at the Marina tomorrow to see if he can suggest a repairer.

I've attached a diagram of the plumbing and indicated the location of the crack.

We'll remove the pump out pipe tomorrow to confirm the problem.

kind regards

Steven

There is a crack in the tank/hose joint in the top left corner of the attached image resulting in raw sewage seeping into the bilge compartment below the floor at the bottom of the companionway. Notice that the pump out waste hose has a very tight curve which places stress on the joint.

Go ahead given to Steve to proceed. He will try to get the tank out prior to Peter Wains booking or before departure to the Port Stephens Race week.

Called Andy from Bavaria on 1300609900 -- he later texted me from his mobile: 0413095760

He recommends the removal of the tank to assess options:

According to Andy, each of these options is cheaper and quicker than importing a new tank. Andy had communicated this info to Steve Vincini, our shipwright in Sydney. Andy didn't think that Steve was keen to do the job.

Importing of a new tank can be organised by Trent on 0413095760

Hi Sam,

Peter Lucy doesn't have time to remove the tank. He is of the view that we should import a new tank ASAP. Andy from Ensign steered us away from this option however I'm getting some pricing/timing on this for committee consideration.

I'm optimistic that the tank can be repaired or remanufactured in OZ. I'll get in touch with Steve Vicini to see if he can do the removal on Monday 3/5 -- if he is not interested/available we may have to do it ourselves during that week and drive the process from there.

Hi Steve,

The crew let me know that you were not able to remove the tank before Namadgi left for Port Stephens. Do you think you will have time during the week beginning 3 May? Namadgi will be at Holme Port during that week and we would like to

Could you please let me know if you can do this work during the period 3-7 May. We will have a maintenance team on the boat at the time to help with the work if necessary. It's vital that we have the heads operational before we leave for Queensland the following week.

Hi Steven,

Turns out that particular holding tank is no longer available – It’s been replaced by a newer one which they use on the current models.

451825 - Waste Tank 70L 2" assem. = $485.00 + Shipping (15 x in stock)

I asked if it’s a direct replacement for the old one(with no modifications or extra parts required to make it fit your yacht). I’m fairly sure it does use the same sender and will be the same size / have the same mounting points, etc.

I’ve also asked for a shipping quote and timeframe for delivery.

I’ll let you know when I hear back on that. Although I might not have an answer back until next week as apparently it’s sometimes difficult for them to get shipping quotes for us recently.

They just came back to me on this. Apparently the new replacement is exactly the same as the old one and the part number only changed just for logistical reasons…

Shipping quote is $390.00

So the total cost for this part would be $875.00

They said ETA is difficult. As we’ve noticed with the last few orders, it could take a few weeks or several months. Hard to tell as Covid has really messed up International delivery times.

Steven, I have thought about the brass fitting solution, however noted all toilet fittings are plastic. Using a metal fitting would be a short term solution, due to potential corrosion problems.

Hi Peter,

Steve, the shipwright from Pittwater Marine has recommended the use of bronze rather than brass. He is suggesting a bronze "skin fitting" as the appropriate connector. In theory, so long as there is no mechanical connection with a dissimilar metal then no galvanic corrosion is possible. The bronze fitting should last a very long time.

We suspect the new model tank from Bavaria uses exactly this approach.

451825 - Waste Tank 70L 2" assem. = $485.00 + Shipping

(15 x in stock)

I asked if it’s a direct replacement for the old one(with no modifications or extra parts required to make it fit your yacht). I’m fairly sure it does use the same sender and will be the same size / have the same mounting points, etc.

I’ve also asked for a shipping quote and timeframe for delivery.

I’ll let you know when I hear back on that. Although I might not have an answer back until next week as apparently it’s sometimes difficult for them to get shipping quotes for us recently.

Kind regards,

Steve and Peter (Pittwater Marine) are working on the tank right now. They report:

They proposed:

They assure me that the final result will be sound and cosmetically pleasing. I've given them the go-ahead as there appear to be no other option.

@delcosta and @PSARN will be interested

Hi Steven,

Attached is a drawing of the tank, with measurements.

They said the fittings are all made of plastic (not bronze, as you suggested might be the case in a previous email).

Hi Trent,

Thank you for all of this information. And thank you for dealing so promptly with my request -- very impressive indeed!!

Is there a public web page where I can view the new model tank?

Meanwhile I'll discuss our options with my club's committee and get back to you.

kind regards Steven

They just came back to me on this. Apparently the new replacement is exactly the same as the old one and the part number only changed just for logistical reasons…

Shipping quote is $390.00

So the total cost for this part would be $875.00

They said ETA is difficult. As we’ve noticed with the last few orders, it could take a few weeks or several months. Hard to tell as Covid has really messed up International delivery times.

Thanks Trent,

I think the new model has bronze fittings to address exactly the problem we are having. Please stay on them we are keen to get an accurate landed cost and timeframe

Pittwater Marine and Slipway Services have done a fabulous job of repairing the tank using the "plastic welding" technique. See photo. Peter the shipwright did a great job of extracting the tank and reinstalling, despite the fact that the tank was "built in" behind the cabinetry.

Closing this issue. @PSARN, @peterottesen and @delcosta will be interested. Removing from "Notice to Skippers"
