After some email correspondence, Garth reports: "the backflow is almost flooding the bowl to overflowing". He has checked the blackwater (holding) tanks are empty.
Peter Ottesen advised all 3 pumps are almost new (date?).
Garth stated: "I got (bought) a Jabsco pump and a jocker valve from the chandler. (NZ$$247.41) So I will replace the forward pump and keep the spare pump for the port aft head which is also flooding badly. That leaves a spare jocker valve for the starboard aft head which has moderate back flow of black water."
Garth reported: "I have replaced the Jabsco pump in the forward head. The joker valve was stuffed as shown in photo. The flapper valve was also worn.
The good news is that there is now NO black water flooding back into the head. I recommend that we throw out the old pump. I have had no luck restoring them in the past." Old Joker Valve
I did some research online about blackwater pumps. The Joker Valve appears to be the crux of most problems, becoming encrusted with calcium.
One solution was a mix of olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice. A good salad dressing. The oil lubricates the plastics, the vinegar dissolves the calcium and the lemon smells nice! Food for thought.
A quick glance at Google shows new pumps at ~AU$220+ or a complete service kit at ~AU$120.
Perhaps the maintenance committee will make a recommendation of putting a service kit through them all every 6 or 12 months, or as required due to failure.
Issue CLOSED
On Tuesday 25 Apr, Garth reported: "All three head pumps are filling with black water due to faulty non return valves. I recommend that we replace all three pumps if I can get them. Having black water flood out of the heads whilst sailing to Fiji would be problematic. All three shower pumps are working well."
