I think this cable can be repaired with some plastic sheathing and/or electrician's tape.
@DimitD -- what do you think? Perhaps another job for Damien?
Cable needs to 'properly' repaired by opening the handheld unit and resoldering shortened wires. Shortening to a good part of the protective coiled cable. Won't make too much difference on using as operator sits to us. Notwithstanding, I have suggested fitting a remote speaker (and potentially) a handset near the helm. Yes, I am aware of weather exposure.
Electrical tape is a temporary repair to make it look pretty and perhaps will stop the eventual failing of the unit.
I've opened the back of the handset. The 12 core spiral cable connects to two circuit boards via "micro plug" PCB connectors. The plastic moulded end connectors are integral with the cable so "shortening" is difficult if not impossible. Internally the wires and end-moulding are cemented in with an epoxy glue. All of which makes this a difficult repair. I notice that the plug end of the cable is also breaking up -- see photos below.
Replacement handsets are available on Ebay for around $US550 -- there might be cheaper available if we keep looking.
Temporary fix with electrical tape
With a temporary fix in place I think we can make this a priority 2 issue
There's a complete handset cheaper on Amazon AU: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDKDCBS?tag=picclick0f-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1. An AMAZON PRIME member. like me, should get it with no shipping perhaps. Its a GHS11, need to check specks and connector to be sure..
cable has split and wires are exposed
