Swim Platform - Electric winch is inoperable - Broken Shear Pin #763

Open smr547 opened 9 months ago

smr547 commented 9 months ago

The roll pin on the swim platform winch is designed to lock the drive shaft to the aluminium drum that drives the lifting rope. If this pin shears it needs to be be replaced using a 3mm pin punch.

Sam McDonald has put some spare roll pins in the stainless box.

The spare roll pin got lost. I will purchase roll pin and pin punch. This item is with me. Sam.

smr547 commented 8 months ago

Thanks for doing that Sam -- let me know if you have problem sourcing the pins -- I'll be at Fyshwick over the next couple of days and can source the stuff from M&G Engineering

I procured a 3mm punch and some roll pins (auto shop) as I could not determine the requirement. Have attempted repair but difficult to reach. Will look to remove winch to cockpit for replacement.

pcbaston commented 8 months ago

Did not manage to remove winch. Repair still required. Pin punch is on top cupboard where keys are kept. Winch handles under. Chris lost one pin into the compartment. I would appear that the previous pin is still in the hole, hence the need for the pin punch and hammer approach (to remove).

As a Note: Care needs to be taken when accessing compartment as the engine compartment breathe trunking (6inch diam) is being crushed by people laying atop. Need to ensure it is returned to dimension to ensure engine compartment is cleared of 'toxic' air.

I just tried the same thing and found it impossible to do the repair. Agree that the winch assembly should be removed so the unit can be inspected and pin replaced on the workbench.

It would be great to get the limit switch working at the same time. (See #672)

Since we now have a 3mm punch and replacement roll pins, I'll change the title of this issue to "Swim platform electric winch is inoperable"

I've removed the winch. Shear pins are intact. However the drum drive shaft is rotating this gearbox indicating the the worm wheel in the gearbox is stripped. I'll put the winch on the workbench at home and investigate further.

I wonder if we can get roll pins that shear at a lower torque?

On inspection there are two major issues with the swim platform drive unit

The drive mechanism appears to be a Minn Kota Deckhad 40 -- we may be able to get spare parts here

I don't know why the controller board on the drive unit has been bypassed -- perhaps it proved faulty at one stage. As a result, the lower limit microswitch has been disabled. On Namadgi 3 the motor has been wired to a separate circuit board which contains the reversing relays upwards limit switch cutoff. I would have been quite a bit of work to install this separate circuit board.

Let's bite the bullet and do away with the troublesome motor. We can replace it with a dedicated system to a winch on deck through the existing blocks and exits.

Here is a photo of the stripped worm gear

The circuit board is also faulty -- the upper limit switch does not work. Board needs replacing

Both parts are available as spares -- yet to be priced.
