Care required when deploying swim platform #765

There have been several incidents when deploying the swim platform. Skippers are asked to:

  1. Not lower the swim platform in choppy conditions. Wave action can lift the platform causing damage to humans and the winch mechanism
  2. Lower the platform only to the extent that dyneema support strops take the weight and no further. Further lowering will cause the winch spool to wind backwards leading to a "diabolical failure" of the system
  3. Never allow the swim platform to be supported by the lifting rope -- the full weight of the platform must be taken by the dyneema stops

In all cases the swim platform should be raised and lowered By the Skipper -- Please do not delegate this operation to inexperience crew.

Closing this issue. It's a Notice to Skippers issue -- these are generally kept in a closed state.
