Age standardized relative survival in NORDCAN is estimated using the Pohar Perme estimator with individual weights (ICSS).
Relative survival is the ratio of the observed survival proportion to the expected survival proportion. The expected survival represents the survival for a similar group without cancer and is calculated using national lifetables stratified by sex, age, and calendar year. Relative survival is an estimate of net survival; the survival in a hypothetical situation where the cancer disease is the only possible cause of death. This measure is useful for comparing populations with different risks of dying from other causes than the cancer disease. Age-standardization is used to make estimates comparable across populations with different age distributions.
