Average function not working depending on range notation

Error with average function

• If the cells are listed in a comma separated list then the correct answer is generated
  • =average(a2,a3,a4,a5,a6)
• If the cells are provided as an Excel notation range A2:A10 then a sum is calculated
  • = average(a2:a6)
