Everything worked as expected during the first play session, but on quitting out of the game and reconnecting, pins remain on the map even after the relevant item has been checked. The pins don't appear to be entirely static, as they do update (grow) as new items become available with new movement options and the like, they just don't go away when the items have been checked.
