So for these databases of OSHA data we are going to want to described the different variables. Break down in a sentence or two what they are about. they what type of data are they? are they a set scale (from 1-10), are they $, are they a short sentence, are they a category of a problem.

Inspection database insp_type safety_hlth why_no_insp osha_violation database current_penalty delete_flag nr_exposed fta_penalty gravity hazcat hazsub(1-5) initial_penalty nr_instances rec

I have shared the google doc containing these breakdowns. The breakdown document can be found in the Hack4CA drive.

Projects > toxic_prisons > OSHA Materials > click: 'Variable Breakdowns'

I will continue working on this doc, as there are a few variables that are not thoroughly explained in the OSHA data dictionary. I will do some more research to try to break these down as best as I can.

Great work! I left some guiding questions on the doc in case they're helpful, if you were already on the case just disregard them :)

This site might be helpful: https://developer.dol.gov/health-and-safety/dol-osha-enforcement/

I found it by googling OSHA and then one of the column headers in quotes. finding governmental documentation is a nightmare!

Helpful report with a breakdown of the data in apendix 1 https://msc.ul.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/UL_WP_Analysis_of_OSHA_Violation_Data_2010-2015.pdf

also they break down "gravity" at the end

posted this question to stack exchange under "labor" as the DOL website says to do: https://opendata.stackexchange.com/questions/17442/where-can-we-find-a-list-of-hazardous-substance-codes-used-in-osha-violation-dat

Ha so the data they have online for hazsub(1-5) is incomplete. Here is a more complete version...that they don't have online.

IMIS 050420.xlsx What is fascinating is that 9839 is Mycobacterium Species and R278 is Fungi and Bacteria and I bet we will find a TON of mold when we test.

Hi Nick and Ivy. I was wondering where the document with Ivy's helpful variable breakdowns went? I can see Ivy had it located originally under "Projects > toxic_prisons > OSHA Materials > click: 'Variable Breakdowns'." But I don't see it there anymore. Thanks!

I don't know! It looks like it was deleted? I searched my whole drive and computer and don't see a trace of it.

Hello all,

I hope I didn't delete it from the entire Carceral drive! I cleared my google files out over the summer, I didn't realize that would also clear them from the carceral drive. Let me see if I can retrieve it from google sheets.

Hello again,

The attempt to retrieve the file was unsuccessful. I'm really sorry about deleting the file on my end, I didn't think it would cause this issue.
