Thanks for the update, Alyssa! It's great to hear that your team has devoted so much time to the planning stages of the design process. We're especially happy to hear that you're making sure that your color choices are accessible to all potential users. Looking forward to seeing how your wireframes are transformed into a project site!
Monthly Project Response (meant to be for October!) It seems like this project is moving along well! Planning the skeleton for your website sounds like a solid plan because it will better help you to visualize the whole site as you begin to develop the details. I especially liked that you all discussed color schemes that are accessible to all users--that is incredibly important for user interface and something that my group should discuss in the future! I think a color scheme can really make or break a website, as it might be too distracting, hard to read, or dull, so it's an important part of the interface because it's one of the first things people notice about a site. Overall, I'm excited to see how your project turns out--you have a lot of great ideas!
Monthly project response for October:
My group is also working right now on web design, specifically the color schemes and other themes we want to incorporate on our webpage. I love that you considered making your site colorblind friendly! I think a combination of different blues would be very aesthetically pleasing. My group leader Charlie recommended us to use this site https://coolors.co/, where you can explore different color palettes and save them, they also give the color codes! Its so fun and it is such a easy way to explore color combos so I recommend you use it if you needed help with that. I love your theme ideas; personally I think it would be really interesting if you tried to combine old-fashion and modern themes. It allows the website to appeal more to the viewer, but also incorporates elements that reflect the aspects of Sherlock Holmes. I think it's wise that you start with the basic out line of web design instead of planning it all at once. Other ideas will for sure come once you guys start experimenting with it! I cant wait to see your finished site, it sounds like the project is coming along well. :)
This week we began discussing design ideas for our project. We looked at previous projects, considered what our abilities and time limits were, and drew out a few small ideas. We discussed colors, in terms of colors that go well together and colors that everyone, including those who are colorblind, can see and appreciate. Fortunately, there are websites that can help us with both of those issues. A strong idea that was brought up seems to be a combination of different blues.
Additionally, we discussed a few basic theme ideas. Modern or purposely old-fashioned to match the Sherlock Holmes stories? We decided on somewhere in the middle, but leaning towards modern because that might be more appealing to the audience. We then considered if we wanted to be minimalistic or not, but didn't really make any firm decisions on that. From looking at other websites that impressed us, we're hoping to do some sort of small animation when you click on a tab, but that'll likely be something that comes at the end if there is time. Our plan, as I'm sure is that of many other groups, is to have the basics down on our website just to make sure it's functional before getting too invested in the design. This will lead to fewer mistakes.
Next week, we will each have our own wireframe, which will allow us to share our individual ideas and build off of them. Hopefully we will all have similar ideas in mind, but different ideas lead to better conversation and may allow us to make our project even better than any of us could've expected. We will also discuss more about the markup that we have mostly completed at this point. Our project is really starting to come to life and it's quite exciting for all of us.
