We don't have a closed set of sources (it's limited, but we can add new ones each day).
A searchbox would be useful for finding the data if you know about data in general and you are like a geek of Open Data portals, but a searchbox wouldn't be useful for discovering data if you don't know what you are doing.
A complete dropdown with all the sources would be too much, so my ideas are:
a) A hybrid: dropdown with a couple suggestions of the most common sources (US Census, Natural Earth...) + a searchbox
b) Just a searchbox. For discovering, we have other filters like categories (admin. regions, cultural, historic...).
there can be a generic solution that also solves this https://github.com/CartoDB/cartodb/issues/5831
so, I'd go for "a) A hybrid: dropdown with a couple suggestions of the most common sources"
assigning to tallon, then
Just to "support" your ideas, here's the list of sources we have atm and their "count":
(It's not totally updated with the last ~6 changes and additions, but it could be useful)
There has been no activity on this issue for more several months. We are closing it. If you think this still needs to be addressed please open a new issue.
current design has it like a dropdown, but they work as a free text; do we have a closed set of sources? should we have a searchbox for this?
