I know there have been discussions here and there about the option to pause an animation or time-series widget.
Some thoughts from the map-making perspective:
If you are add a time-series or animation widget to a map, the map animates by default. This is one of the reasons that it would be nice to have the animation pause by default option. Users won't want their maps animated without knowing why that is happening or ways to change that default behavior. In addition, all other widgets start to "animate" and there is no way to control the speed unless you write new animation styling.
Another reason, especially relevant for the time-series widget, is the ability to see the count of occurrences over time. This is actually a really handy data summary but because features are animated and fading in and out, if you select a time range on the time-series widget, you don't actually see all of the features in that range. This is because previous features that have already been animated are gone and only the ones in the current animation cycle show. Play around with this map to see what I mean:
