ITIS - Onychohydrus scutellaris (Germar, 1848) - suggested synonym #293

Describe the problem: This suggestion was originally reported in the GBIF Portal feedback: https://github.com/gbif/backbone-feedback/issues/414

One of our users is suggesting to add Sternhydrus scutellaris as a synonym of Onychohydrus scutellaris (Germar, 1848).

The genus Sternhydrus was coined as a subgenus of Homoeodytes, which was itself synonymized under Onychohydrus in 1989, at which time the species in question was classified in subgenus Onychohydrus (Onychohydrus), not in subgenus Onychohydrus (Sternhydrus). Sternhydrus was only elevated to full genus status in 2007. Note also that Cybister scutellaris Germar, 1848 is the type species for Homoeodytes Régimbart, 1879, so transferring the species scutellaris would effect a transfer of Homoeodytes to Sternhydrus, as well.

Onychohydrus & Sternhydrus are closely related, but I have been unable to find any published (or pre-published) work that places this species within Sternhydrus (or that transfers Homoeodytes to Sternhydrus). At this point it seems most likely that the NCBI entry provided is simply an error (or perhaps a novel taxonomic view that will be formally published at some point), so for now we will not add this apparently unpublished combination & taxonomic view to ITIS.

The treatment for these genera in ITIS appears to be current, just as it is now: Tribe Cybistrini Sharp, 1880 -Genus Onychohydrus Schaum and White, 1847 ---Species Onychohydrus hookeri (White, 1846) ---Species Onychohydrus scutellaris (Germar, 1848) -Genus Sternhydrus Brinck, 1945 ---Species Sternhydrus atratus (Fabricius, 1801) ---Species Sternhydrus gibbosus (Wilke, 1920) ---Species Sternhydrus kolbei (Wilke, 1920) ---Species Sternhydrus toxopei (Zimmermann, 1925)

We will be happy to reconsider this if additional published works supporting this change can be suggested.
