Are these >120k real names COL is missing?
In a sample of 1000 names only 56 had a match with the latest extended release. I made a random check, and several of those names used to be on COL but where deleted, other sources that still report those names reference back to COL or to a GSD from COL.
So I assume its worth hunting for sources with these names then? I just looked up Aades bicristatus and found entries on Animal Diversity Web and Wikipedia where there are references given, so it seems like a legid name to include.
update, I had to rematch the info as I selected the wrong release, in the same sample of 1000 names I get 565 in the xrelease and 435 without match. So the xrelease is doing a great job filling potential GAPS.
Aades bicristatus, is an example of a name that has been on COL in previous editions an latter disapeared, that means that something happened or a decision was taken by the original global source in this case the Catalogue of Weevil names. The reference of this name is EOL and the page is broken, the other links are also broken. Is hard to really know if is a legit name with the current information.
I saw similar cases for diptera, in the diptera case I think we should trust systema dipterorum.
from the South African list discovered by matching. Might be mostly included in the xcol, but worth checking for major genera missing?
