Project Catalyst Weekly Newsletter - Friday, 29th April 2022

2022-04-12 (3)

The Audit Circle began like most things in Catalyst. A person had an idea, created a proposal, the community voted on it, and then it was funded. The idea was to guide improvements needed to maximize each funding round's return on intention. There are a lot of proposals at this point and more each round. Many would agree that ensuring these proposals are held accountable and follow through on what they were funded for is important for Catalyst to succeed. The Audit Circle attempts to explore ways to do just that.

This week Audit Circle met for the fourth time and addressed one of the key deliverables of the project, a survey to funded proposers about their various approaches to project monitoring and evaluation.

Look out for this survey soon and add your voice! We also planned an After Town Hall on Weds 11th May, which will focus on the issues around monthly reporting, so please join us for that.

What is the Audit Circle?

The Audit Circle began like most things in Catalyst. A person had an idea, created a proposal, the community voted on it, and then it was funded. The idea was to guide improvements needed to maximize each funding round's return on intention. There are a lot of proposals at this point and more each round. Many would agree that ensuring these proposals are held accountable and follow through on what they were funded for is important for Catalyst to succeed. The Audit Circle attempts to explore ways to do just that.

What is the Audit Circle doing?

That mandate is quite broad and covers a wide range of possibilities. The Audit Circle is currently trying to accomplish it by holding office hours, holding spaces after town hall, creating a survey to gather information from the community on what potential issues they are seeing or room for improvement, and producing a report that compiles that information along with some conclusions or possible suggestions for improvement. In the most recent meeting we discussed progress in each of these areas with a main focus on how to improve the reporting process for Catalyst funded projects (e.g. ensuring the information that is reported is beneficial to the community and not overburdensome for the proposer).

How to get Involved?

Are you interested in improving Auditability of Catalyst or perhaps just want to learn more about what the circle does? That’s great, there are a few different ways to get into contact and participate.

The meeting addressed one of the key deliverables of the project - a survey to funded proposers about their various approaches to project monitoring and evaluation, without which auditing is difficult, if not impossible. If you are a funded proposer, look out for this survey soon, and add your voice! We also planned an After TownHall on Weds 11th May, which will focus on the issues around monthly reporting, so please join us for that.

In the second half of the meeting we looked ahead to our other key deliverable - a final report on our work in fund 7, to be produced in June. This led on to a more wide-ranging discussion about audit in Catalyst in general; from what is the purpose of monthly monitoring?, through as a community, what do we want to know about projects' progress?, to is social media an effective place to conduct audit? We discussed whether we are beginning to produce a culture of "calling people out" without full information, and the effects, positive and negative, this can have on the Catalyst community as a whole.

The next Audit Circle meeting is on Thurs 12th May.
