Please let me know if it makes any sense and keep the picture still.

Change to:

This study looks at people with sickle cell disease, who have abnormal red blood cells that carry less oxygen and can cause blockages in blood vessel system, pain, and inflammation. In sickle cell disease, sleep problems are also common, either due to breathing difficulties from enlarged tonsils and/or asthma, poorer oxygenation of blood during sleep, and also stress and worry about their disease.   After nights without sufficient sleep, many people experience day time sleepiness, which results in concentration problems at school and work. Lack of sleep at night can be the cause of different health problems and cause more stress. When a person is stressed, a stress hormone called cortisol is released into the blood – this has been linked to increased inflammation and lower cognitive functioning.

There are a few ways in which we would like to assess your sleep behaviour and patterns, cortisol and cognitive abilities :

Sleep Diary App: We will ask you to fill in information about your sleep behaviour each morning, every day. The app also contains a pain diary. We will ask you to fill in information about your experiences pain once a day as well.

Actiwatch: The watch is worn 24 hours a day on the non-dominant hand. For example, we can measure your average sleep time and get an indication fo your sleep disturbance.

Polysomnography: The device is worn over night on 1 or 2 nights. This will measure your obstruction of airflow during your sleep.

Cortisol: Will be collected with a cotton swab from your saliva on one day at 4 different time points.

Cognitive Abilities: The assessment will take about 2 - 2 1/2 hours on one day. We will allow you breaks in-between. We will assess your cognitive abilities with different neuropsychological assessment methods. It will give us an insight about your cognitive abilities, such as your memory, executive functioning, processing speed and vocabulary.

MRI: The scan will take about 45 min to complete. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan uses a magnetic field rather than x-rays to take pictures. It will give us an insight in your brains structure and function.

If you would like to know more about each device please go back to the main menu and tap on the corresponding button on your phone.
