Addresses #53.

This merge request is for development branch. Note that I think we want to set the default repo branch to be development instead of main. That way issues can be closed after a merge to development while still leaving the main branch open for release management.

After we merge this I also suggest a new tagged release (e.g. further merge to main, add tag, add release notes). Of course the exact timing would depend a bit on the stability of the development branch.
