Some of the images are very large because there are multiple pages out of a book stitched end to end in the image and the image is shown scaled down in a box. The intended functionality is to have them be more life sized and have the image viewer scroll through them.

The image is set to a max width of 95% of the container and the height is allowed to resolve to whatever it has to with the width restriction. If it is very tall, the container is scrollable. Tested.
