I believe Facebook, at the time, recommended 1500x1500. This doesn't actually get sent to the user, it's used by the crawler to generate a thumbnail. It looks like the current recommendation is at least 1200 x 630. It varies a lot among social networks. I'm not sure if there is a happy medium here.

If you have better guidance for optimizing, I would suggest opening another PR. My goal was at least to mention it and provide some references. I'd like to see a new section on optimizing images , in general, that we can reference here.

Whenever we offer guidance based on an external requirement, I think it's useful to link to the source as part of the docs. That way we can adapt (and figure out the rule at all) if external requirements change in the future.

Agreed on image optimization as a separate section with a link in a future PR.
