No unread message badges

I read the push issues on here (especally #770) and implemented the advice given.

I am still unclear on one point, however:

My users on Chatsecure are receiving push notifications for OMEMO encrypted messages, which results in them getting one "New Message" notification-widget per message in their notification list.

What they are not seeing is a badge on the chatsecure app icon with a count of unread messages.

Because of the different types of notifications, I am unsure if I should expect this badge to even exist, or if it is a limitation of the current push system.

Can someone enlighten me?

The actual use case this question stems from, is a user with an apple watch:

• They receive the new message notification on the watch, but aren't near their phone
• They acknowledge the notification on the watch
• Once they are back to the phone their is no indication that there are unread messages
• This is in contrast to the bustling badge icon on the whatsapp client, which is begging for attention

Hi, notifications work OK, but the icon badge is not shown until you open the app! The ideal would be that the badge is shown as soon as there are some unread messages (like it works for the e-mail app), to remind you to open the app and read the messages. iPhone 8 iOS v. 14.4.2
