The *.webm video format stopped working in IE9? #478

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open IE9.
2. Go to any website broadcasting in *.webm video format.
3. Video doesn't play any more.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The "X" sign indicating missing file.

What version are you using? On what Windows version?
Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Please provide any additional information below.

Up till about a few days ago the *.webm video format was working just fine in
IE9, but now it just stopped. What happened? I went to download and re-install
the *.webm codec from the Google support page at
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/webmmf - but no use! I've checked on 3
different computers, all played the *.webm without any problems before, but now
they all stopped recognizing this format for no apparent reason. Any idea
why??? Did Microsoft start blocking this "plugin"?

All 3 computers are independently operated and confirmed the same issue. Now IE
only plays back the *.mp4 video format on the tested websites. When I clicked
on the video's "Save As" link, they all indicated the *.mp4 format ONLY, even
though the *.webm is listed in the code as the first "option", and *.mp4 as the
fall-back format.

Meanwhile I checked with a friend from oversea and he said the same. He could
watch the tested sites in WEBM before but now there is nothing!

The websites we've tested worked fine with Chrome, but not with IE9.

Please check out your "plugin" to make sure it starts playing back the WEBM
format in IE9 again. That's all I've got. Thanks!

Please confirm that playback fails at the following URL:

Also, please report any messages about browser support that the page returns.
Thanks.

First that page showed that the browser could not play webm. Then I downloaded
and installed the webm plugin/codec again, rebooted the computers and then they
played back that page with the following message:

"Congratulations! Your browser reports that it can play WebM video. The browser
responded with: •canPlayType supported? Yes
•WebM video supported? probably"

Now I've checked out a couple of pages that I had a problem watching, but they
are all the same. They work with Chrome but not with IE9. What does that mean?
Incorrect WEBM "Mime Type" configuration on those servers? Are there any other
test sites you can recommend? What to do now? Thanks.

Thanks. Few questions:

(We'll assume here that the components re-installed correctly, though it's
unknown what broke them.)

> "Congratulations! Your browser reports that it can play WebM video.
> The browser responded with: •canPlayType supported? Yes
> •WebM video supported? probably"

* IE9 reported this?
* IE9 plays the video on our page successfully at this point?

> Now I've checked out a couple of pages that I had a problem watching,

Chrome doesn't use the components; it should work with any properly-served WebM
data. Only Windows apps that use Media Foundation are affected by the
components.

Please provide several example URLs with WebM videos that fail to play in IE9,
so we can inspect them.

The player at the bottom of the following page is known-good and only offers
WebM. Does this play in IE9 for you?

Thanks for your help.
