Update: i have checked the Greek version of every critical edition I could access at KU Leuven, and none of the authoritative ones has βασιλεύς capitalized when referring to the king of Persia. It still bothers me though, for some reason...maybe something to discuss..
Just a quick update on the issue of "King," whether or not it's capitalized, etc. in English translations of Xenophon's Anabasis. I took a look at different editions I could find online for free/through the Furman library: For context:
The original Greek (on Scaife) uses βασιλεύς for instances of "king" (not capitalized)
I'm annotating in the Carleton Lewis Brownson edition, which almost always does capitalize "King" (the only exceptions being at the beginning of Book 1, where it seems to refer to the position; see 1.1.3-5)
The H.G. Dakyns version does not capitalize king
The J.S. Watson version does not capitalize king
The Wayne Ambler version does (no reasoning given)
