App force closing when in background #135

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
From our listener services team:

After hours and sometimes days without using the NPR News app, I will be
performing some other task on my phone and a prompt will come up that the NPR
News app is not responding and needs to be force closed. The prompt comes up
twice back to back and then the issue is resolved until I either use the app
again or restart my phone.

This issue sounds like something we should be able to isolate using
crittercism. Can we look for any FCs occurring in large numbers while the app
is in the background?

Based on crittercism, I resolved a few issues that could be the culprit here,
though the vagueness of the report makes it very hard to pin down the issue.
If we could get logs from users when this happens, it'd be much more likely
that I could address the issue.

Agreed. Done my best to do some heavy lifting on the device with NPR in the
background. No crashes randomly. If we see this popping up again, we can
revisit.

Sorry I somehow had missed this, and reported it as Issue # 151. re-posting.

---
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Launch App
2. Play latest news summary
3. Press home button, continue to do other stuff with other applications (e.g.,
the browser, twitter, etc.)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect the playback to finish, and then the icon to disappear. And then,
nothing. Instead, sometimes I get a crash dialog before the playback finishes,
and even more strangely, the playback finishes, the icon disappears, but I keep
getting crash notifications intermittently.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
7222 / 2.2.2
on Android 4.0.4 on Nexus S

Please provide any additional information below.

Hi,
I reported about three crashes after this latest update. Hopefully their
stacktraces are visible to you in the developer console.

1.
NullPointerException at PlayBackService.java:210 (onHandleIntent). Screenshot
attached.

2. NullPointerException in the Ford Proxy Service (sorry but my screenshot was
obscured by the volume icon. Will get another one when it crashes next).

If you'd like me to test by building from the latest version from the trunk,
I'd be happy to test.

Thanks

We've got a new build in the wings. Hoping this stability issue will be
significantly improved or resolved.
