added option in likelihood plot_p1d to plot residuals #67

It only modifies this plotting function, and I've tested its functionality, so we can probably merge right away.

At the end I decided to add in the same pull request the option to cull some of the low-probability points in the chains that we discussed.

I've tested both features on my laptop and at NERSC.
