I have tried to support extent. I am still on the testing process but it looks promising (your class is inside the Matplotlib backend I am writing to my application (pymca/PyMca/plotting/backends/MatplotlibBackend.py). I'll keep you informed. In any case, I learned a lot about matplotlib with your little module.
