xml.etree.ElementTree may be better than minidom.
Its available in 2.5 and up, and may have fixed the two issues we are currently
working around / ignoring for minidom:
1. \r\t\n are not escaped correctly in attributes.
2. eol value is ignored in the xml header.
If it fixes these two, it would definitely be worth switching to.
