Excellent advice! Another example: RevoUninstaller. I actually love this program, but recently used it to remove Apple's QuickTime, and after RevoUninstaller "cleaned up the leftovers in the registry", the sound no longer worked. Thank you Chris for the reminder!
The reason they still exist is because the vast majority of registry entries are used for fingerprinting. Of course uninstallers will still 'market' them as a cleaning operation, but real open source uninstallers like BCUninstaller know why these entries should be removed.
