GUI starts, demand that I tweak som settings and on pressing apply the program 
exits.

This error pretty much always means that EDB was built with a different version 
of QT than it's plugins. This may have happened if you attempted to upgrade EDB 
by overwritting it's source directory with the newer version without cleaning 
it first. In the EDB directory, try:

make distclean

then rebuild it as normal and see if that fixes it.

My bad, it would seem that a binary only application installed on the system 
came with its own libQtCore.so.4 and a sad LD_LIBRARY_PATH override which 
caused it to get loaded on runtime. Killing the LD_LIBRARY_PATH sorted it all.
