I'm not quite sure why I should do this, are there any disadvantages to using GitHub Release? Or does Fdroid have some features worth trying?

Its a store dedicated to open source software. Many privacy enthusiast and open source lovers use this store on android. It helps in the discoverability of this app to people finding open source alternatives.

Its not that there is a problem with github. Moreso it has to do with the low discoverability of apps on github. If you were to look around fdroid, you would see that all apps and open source and the source code is linked below(mostly github). I know it won't benefit you. But could you consider just posting there just so there is more discoverability of this app. Also it helps that anyone that has installed fdroid on android could have their apps be updated by fdroid and they wouldn't need to check individual github repositories. :)

Here is a referral on how to publish on fdroid. https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Submitting_to_F-Droid_Quick_Start_Guide/ Now there is another way to get in. This store support other people's repositories. If you want an alternate method there is a famous repository named izzyondroid which is used by almost everybody. And to publish there, you just need to issue a request here. https://gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo/ He will help you guide through the rest.

If developer do not care about Reproducable Build, I can help. Apart from the notes above, it is the only way to upload your store in China without register to government（备案）... (Although F-Droid's website is banned, its app can be reached through Tsinghua Tuna mirror and Nanjing University Mirror)
