Converted readme to markdown #5

The syntax highlighted code example was written in github flavored markup style to enable syntax highlighting but the rest of the document was rdoc so it didn't render properly on github.

Unfortunately, I've had to revert this change, as the Readme being rdoc was part of the test suite. There was another PR that fixed the same problem while keeping the test suite green. I opted to go with that one, but thank you for submitting this PR.
