Is there a way to get a ppa for the current release?
As a user of an Ubuntu LTS version (24.04.1 LTS) I would like to be able to decide whether I want to use the older ClamAV branch 1.0.* (LTS branch) or rather the one with the latest ClamAV software directly from Cisco/Talos/ClamAV.
Uninstalling the included ClamAV stuff first and then installing the deb for each new version is quite time-consuming and the user always has to check for a new version himself (somewhat inconvenient).
Therefore, a separate package source (in-app-updates) for the current final would be desirable.
Although I use Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, I am willing to give up the ClamAV LTS and rather use the latest version (currently 1.4.1).
I have no problems to apply a new ppa source like sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-clamav/ppa (this one never exists anymore), this can also be a github location like deb https://github.com/Cisco-Talos/clamav/releases/ubuntu noble release
It would be really, really great if we could get such a solution. Everyone knows that it's important to keep your antivirus software up to date, regardless of whether it's “LTS” or not. Unfortunately, we all know that Ubuntu is not necessarily the fastest company when it comes to providing new (fixed) software.
Although I don't really understand this “dilemma” with LTS and non-LTS anyway.
Why does Ubuntu want to develop or modify ClamAV for Ubuntu itself? Why can't they just use the software provided by ClamAV and be fine?
