This PR is to merge all the work for devlop and delete the 4-isolated-nodes branch

@nunojusto Can you update your branch with what is on develop as I think you are bringing in a number of changes that already exist in develop - after that I'll review 👍

@revett after some headache trying to git sync back and forth i think it's all done.
