First attempt of definition of Building Types. Building Types.pdf

To be discussed/rearranged together as it is quite hard to be both exhaustive and selective.. When done with that we could maybe go on with the definition of space types and try to assign them to every Building Type ?

Would love to have your thoughts on that.

agrignard commented 4 years ago

Ok great first iteration. As we are also having this discussion in this other project so maybe it would make sense to follow the same standard https://github.com/CityScope/cityscope.github.io/issues/15 where we basically use this standard in us https://planning-org-uploaded-media.s3.amazonaws.com/document/LBCS.pdf

Do you think you can explore maybe a version with the corresponding LBCS code?

cocsfav commented 4 years ago

Ok great we will explore a version corresponding LBCS code.

pacopaco74 commented 4 years ago

Thanks Arnaud. We checked the LBCS code which basically define every piece of land in the US by using 5 categories : Activity, Function, Structure, Site and Ownership. However this level of complexity seems unnecessary in our model. We think that defining buildings using only the category Activity would be the most relevant.

That would look like this :

Residential activities Household activities Transient living Institutional living

Shopping, business, or trade activities Shopping Restaurant-type activity Office activities

Industrial, manufacturing, and waste-related activities Plant, factory, or heavy goods storage or handling activities Solid waste management activities Construction activities (grading, digging, etc.)

Social, institutional, or infrastructure-related activities School or library activities Emergency response or public-safety-related activities Activities associated with utilities (water, sewer, power, etc.) Mass storage, inactive Health care, medical, or treatment activities Interment, cremation, or grave digging activities Military base activities

Travel or movement activities Pedestrian movement Vehicular movement Trains or other rail movement Sailing, boating, and other port, marine and water-based activities Aircraft takeoff, landing, taxiing, and parking Spacecraft launching and related activities

Mass assembly of people Passenger assembly Spectator sports assembly Movies, concerts, or entertainment shows Gatherings at fairs and exhibitions Mass training, drills, etc. Social, cultural, or religious assembly Gatherings at galleries, museums, aquariums, zoological parks, etc. Historical or cultural celebrations, parades, reenactments, etc.

Leisure activities Active leisure sports and related activities Passive leisure activity Flying or air-related sports Water sports and related leisure activities

Natural resources-related activities Farming, tilling, plowing, harvesting, or related activities Livestock related activities Pasturing, grazing, etc. Logging Quarrying or stone cutting Mining including surface and subsurface strip mining Drilling, dredging, etc

No human activity or unclassifiable activity Not applicable to this dimension Unclassifiable activity Subsurface activity To be determined

However, it seems like you guys already went through a simplification process based on the LBCS code (in the issue you sent us in your last comment CityScope/cityscope.github.io#15) to make the number of sub-categories drop down to twenty :

HOUSING 1 | Household activities (Residential activities) 2 | Transient living (Residential activities) 3 | Institutional living (Residential activities)

AMENITIES 4 | Hotels 5 | Restaurants 6 | Night life 7 | Leisure and Wellness 8 | Culture 9 | Shopping Centers 10 | Banks 11 | Educational

PARK 12 | Parks

TRANSPORTATION 13 | Transportation

SAFETY AND SECURITY 14 | Public Safety

WELLBEING 15 | Health Care

OFFICE 16 | Public Administration 17 | Finance 18 | Scientific and Technical

INDUSTRY 19 | Manufacturing

NATURE 20 | Nature

pacopaco74 commented 4 years ago

Should we use this last one as a basis for our model or was it specific to the other project you were working on ?

agrignard commented 4 years ago

Thank you @pacopaco74 , yes it would be great to use this last one (the 20 items) for our model.

pacopaco74 commented 4 years ago

Ok great. So I guess the next move would be to define standard space types (rooms, meeting rooms, coffee, toilets,...) for every one of the 20 Architectural types ? and try to keep the number of space types as low as possible ? @agrignard

See #78

agrignard commented 4 years ago

Reopening it as by discussing with @MarkusElKatsha we quicklu figure out that #78 was made for architectural artefact not for spaces so I reopen this issue for now

this can be a starting point https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IBC2015/chapter-3-use-and-occupancy-classification

pacopaco74 commented 4 years ago

Hey @agrignard ! With @cocsfav we did review the different type of classification (IBC, LBCS, etc) and tried to choose the best one. However it seems to us that, as complete as they are, they might be not very suitable to our goal which is create an adaptative layer system for each building we will put inside the simulation. Indeed, those classifications were often designed with an other purpose in mind and we feel like it would be overwhelming and confusing for a potential user. You will find below an other iteration that we propose and which mixes together various classification systems. We would love to discuss about it before starting developing every categories into sub-categories (as in red on the image below) which will be a lot of work to accomplish

Thank you @pacopaco74 and @cocsfav for your precious input on this. I close this issue for now as the project is currently really focus on Covid in Guadalajara. But all this inout are anyway stored and will be reuse later
