Home page CTAs aren't calling to action #6

The donation and download buttons at the top aren't calling to action for a few reasons:

  1. Little contrast. Nothing calls attention to them.
  2. Tiny fonts. CTAs should have larger, bolder text than the rest of the buttons/links.
  3. Tiny buttons. The menu items are larger than the CTAs.

Recommend at the very least changing the background color of the download link, although the buttons should be made larger and moved to a more appropriate area for a CTA. image

This rule purples the final anchor in the list, though that may be assuming too much.

Noting that it's easy to spot these links when they're screenshotted like this; in the context of the full page, they're lost.

@BlueSkyPhoenix @striebwj what do y'all think about this? I like the purple button.

I think we can launch like this, and refine further (make the buttons larger) if still needed.

I like the purple, as @johnalarcon says it now looks like a CTA. Especially important if aren't going to have another CTA above the fold on the home page.

Any thoughts on putting a larger (still purple!) "Get ClassicPress" CTA in the hero below "Powerful. Versatile. Predictable."?

striebwj commented 5 years ago

I think that would be good to add in the future, but for now let's launch like this.

This is exactly the area I envisioned for the CTA in saying, ..."and moved to a more appropriate area for a CTA." :)

While a simple color change can make a world of difference (particularly to those of us who are color-deficient) it will also help full-color vision folks. On that note, I agree this isn't a blocker to launch.

I agree. In fact, I started to make the changes, but, realized that it would require more attention than I had at the moment. Enlarging the buttons (if left in that location) would make the top look a bit wonky (too tall, not harmonious with the design). I'd leave the donation link in the upper-right corner, in green...and make the Get ClassicPress button a larger CTA in the content area similar to what @timbocode described. CTAs in a bar across the top almost always for "Register" (primary CTA) or "Login" (secondary CTA) so, if a person isn't there to login for something, I could see these buttons being missed due to a sort of expectational-blindness effect (if you will.)

Just noting that we do already have a larger "Get ClassicPress" CTA, it is just a bit further down the page.

I think this is OK for now (a small, colorful button "above the fold" and a larger one "below the fold"). If we put a larger button "above the fold" then I don't think that would look quite as nice, and we'd probably also want to move or remove the other buttons. Also I can definitely see how just making the top-right buttons larger would hurt the rest of the design.

In summary, we can keep looking for a better solution but I am fine with the way it is now for launch.

This would be a given. Too many calls to action leads to paralysis.
